RAISED BED AND CONTAINER WEEKLY DIARY
WEEK 2 IN JULY
Article by David Marks.
CONTAINER GROWN PEAR TREES
Pear trees often produce too much fruit and now is the time to thin them out for maximum crops. Pear fruit should be no closer than 10cm apart so aim for this when thinning the fruit. A pair of secateurs should be used to cut off unwanted fruit to ensure no damage is done to the branches.
HARVEST FRENCH BEANS
Read our main article here on French Beans for full information on how to harvest them. With French beans in raised beds or containers it is more important than normal to harvest them correctly. Simply pulling the beans off the plant may well pull them out of the crumbly soil. We recommend you cut the beans off with scissors.

HARVEST GARLIC
When garlic leaves start to turn yellow it’s time to think about harvesting your garlic crop from your raised beds and containers. See our main garlic article for information on how to harvest, harden and store garlic.
HARVEST SUMMER RADISH
Harvest summer radishes, see our main radish article by
clicking here for full details.
SOW MORE LETTUCE SEEDS
See our main article on lettuce for detailed instructions and a video showing how to sow lettuce in raised beds and containers.
THIN LETTUCE SEEDLINGS
Thin lettuce seedlings to about 10cm / 4in apart initially. Later in the year when they start to touch each other harvest the small ones and eat them, these are the most delicious of all lettuces. See our full article on the care of lettuces
here.
WEEKLY FEEDING OF RAISED BEDS
FEED POTATOES IN CONTAINERS
We recommend feeding potatoes in containers every other week with a liquid tomato feed.
Click here for more details in our main article.
The main article on feeding potatoes in containers and raised beds also suggests that this week you feed them with a handful or two per container of blood, fish and bone. This is a naturally occurring, organic fertiliser.
This is more long lasting than liquid tomato feed and supplies the full range of nutrients necessary for healthy growth. Simply sprinkle the fertiliser over the surface of the compost and gently work it in with your hands. Give the potato containers a water to work the fertiliser into the compost.
