RAISED BED AND CONTAINER WEEKLY DIARY
WEEK 2 IN OCTOBER
STORE MAINCROP POTATOES
Early frosts may soon be approaching so now is the time to store your maincrop potatoes ready for winter.
Choose a sunny day so that you can lay the potatoes out for a couple of hours in the sun. This will slightly harden the skins of the potatoes which increases their storage life.
Click here for our main article about storing maincrop potatoes.
We describe where to store them, what to store them in and the best conditions for ensuring they last well.
SUSAN’S ADVICE – LAYERING
Layering is one of the simplest methods of propagating some plants. Most semi-woody shrubs (e.g. potentillas), clematis and even blackberries and currants can be propagated for free this way.
It’s easy, just bend a stem down to ground level and bury the middle of the stem in the ground. A stone may be needed to hold it in place. Do this around now and by next autumn the buried stem will have roots and can be cut away and planted elsewhere.
HARVEST WINTER RADISH
