RAISED BED AND CONTAINER WEEKLY DIARY
WEEK 3 IN JULY
Article by David Marks.
HARVEST BEETROOT
The tastiest and sweetest beetroot are about golf ball size although they are fine harvested anything up to about tennis ball size. You can gauge the size by clearing a little soil from the top of the beetroot.
Grip the foliage near the round beetroot and gently tease the beetroot out of the ground without breaking the roots. This is relatively easy in the light soil of a raised bed.
If you are storing the beetroot rather than using it immediately, cut off most of the top foliage but leave 3cm / 1in or so. If you cut all the foliage off the beetroot will start to “bleed” which leaves a mess and causes it to loose moisture. The same goes for trimming up the roots, leave about 3cm / 1in of root.
Continue to harvest your beetroot over the nefruitarticlesxt month or so. The last date for harvesting beetroot is sometime towards the end of September.

ADD BLOOD, FISH AND BONE TO POTATOES IN CONTAINERS
Blood, fish and bone contains more nutrients compared to the regular tomato feed so we suggest adding another handful to each potato container. Water it in to stop it blowing away.
SOW WINTER RADISH
If you sow winter radish now they should be ready for harvest in around eight weeks time. Unlike summer radish they keep well in the ground. Click here for our main article about radish which describes exactly how to grow winter radish.
HARVEST FRENCH BEANS
Read our main article here on French Beans for full information on how to harvest them.
