RAISED BED AND CONTAINER WEEKLY DIARY
WEEK 1 IN APRIL
Telling vegetable seedlings and small weeds apart can often be a problem. The best way to avoid this problem is to sow your vegetables seeds in a straight line and then the vegetables will be easy to spot from the weeds. It’s easy when you know how!
Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary, basil, sage, oregano and others grow very well in containers and raised beds. I visited the National Herb Centre near Banbury and asked them which soil they used for growing their herbs. They use simple multi-purpose compost almost all the time and this is their recommendation. In general, herbs thrive on a slightly dry and poor soil so don’t water or feed them often.
FINAL SOWING OF PARSNIP SEEDThis is about the last chance to successfully sow parsnip seed. Read our detailed easy-to-understand instructions here about sowing parsnip seed. For parsnips the next action will be to thin the seedlings. Full details on how to do this can be found here.
SECOND SOWING OF CARROTS
Sow some more early carrot seeds to ensure a continuous supply in later weeks.
