Carrots are cool weather vegetables so will stand being sown before the last frost is due. Late March in warmer areas is a good time to start sowing early varieties of carrots, a week or two later in cooler parts of the UK. Our main carrot article, which can be found here, explains two methods of sowing carrots in containers and raised beds.Succession sowing is the best advice to avoid a glut of carrots all at the same time. Sow the carrot seed in a groove made in the soil which is roughly 2cm / just under an inch deep. Sow the seed thinly to reduce the need of thinning the seedlings out later. When sown, the seedlings should appear in ten days time depending on the weather conditions.PLANT ONION SETS
Onion sets are far more reliable compared to onion seeds and they establish quicker. The only advantage onion seeds have over sets is that the range of varieties to choose from is far larger.
For the beginner however, we would recommend onion sets every time. Our favourite variety (widely available as onion sets) is Red Baron. A lovely colour in salads, they cook and keep well.

SOW ONION SEED
Sow onion seed in rows just over 2cm / 6in apart.

SOW TOMATO SEEDS INDOORS
You need to plan ahead to sow tomatoes indoors at the correct time. Too early and the plants will take up too much room, too late and your tomatoes may not ripen fully. See
our article on how and when to sow tomato seeds for the best chance of success.
