Plum Crumble
(cheap and quick)

There are hundreds of plum crumble recipes in cookbooks and on the internet, many using exotic ingredients and complicated cooking methods. Our recipe below has been tried by us literally a hundred times or more and its simplicity allows the plum flavour to combine perfectly with a crunchy crumble topping.

It's cheap (especially if the plums are home-grown), easy and quick but delicious at the same time. If you have a glut of plums the entire plum crumble can be frozen or just the plum filling.

INGREDIENTS

900g / 2lbs of plums
 
115g / 4oz granulated sugar
 
170g / 6oz butter or cooking margarine (room temperature)
 
280g / 10oz plain (or self-raising) flour

PPREPARATION

  • Start pre-heating the oven to

    200°C / 400°F (fan ovens 180°C – 350°F) , Gas Mark 6.

     
  • Cut the butter into small pieces
     
  • Remove stones from plums and cut plums into quarters

START COOKING!

  • Add the butter and flour to a bowl and mix together for three to four minutes with your hands or a fork until the mixture starts to form into crumbs.
     
  • Pour in HALF the sugar and mix it in with a fork for another two minutes.
     
  • Add the plums to a casserole dish (it should be about three quarters full) and sprinkle over the rest of the sugar
     
  • Spread the crumble mix evenly over the top. Don't press too hard to avoid it sinking into the plums.
     
  • Place in the pre-heated oven for 35 – 40 minutes until the topping turns golden brown
     
  • Serve with cream, ice cream or custard.
