RAISED BED AND CONTAINER WEEKLY DIARY
WEEK 3 IN MARCH
Article by David Marks.
One of the benefits of raised bed gardens is that lots of plants can be grown in
a small area. However, you need to make sure that the soil is fed well to support all that growth. We explain in simple terms how and when to feed the soil in a raised bed. Click
here for full details.PLANT OUT SEED POTATOES
The end of this week or the beginning of the next week is the time to plant out your seed potatoes, maybe slightly later if you are in the cooler parts of the UK.Our main article on planting seed potatoes in containers explains how to calculate when to plant out your potatoes. It also explains how to plant them out depending on whether you want to earth up or not. We also describe how to protect your potato foliage from a late frost.

In cooler areas it will be best to start sowing lettuce a little later, at the beginning of April.
Choose a small, compact variety such as Little Gem.
Like many vegetables, sow a few every week to ensure you widen the possible cropping period. Follow the instructions on the pack and you won’t go wrong.

Lettuce prefer cool conditions so they don’t mind some shade and will positively appreciate it in warm conditions. Pick them when they are young and crisp. Once picked, even out the soil and sow replacement seed. They require no special attention, just the normal raised bed feeding and watering as described
here.
