Can I plant a forsythia near my house for screening or will the root grow to big and damage the house foundations

ANSWER: Forsythia aren’t known for having invasive roots but ever situation is different. Don’tplant it too near your house, allow enough distance for it to receive a good supply of rain water.

I have a old Forsythia that is likely to be 50 years old. I’m redesigning the garden and take in the way of the new patio. I’m really attached to it as my mum planted it. Is it possible to relocate it without causing damage? Thank you

ANSWER: I think the chances of success with a large 50 year old shrub are small but I’ve never tried. One major problem will be root damage combined with water loss. Shock will also be a factor. Without a doubt this is probably the worst time of year to attempt such a move. If you do attempt to move it, do it when it is dormant and the leaves have fallen.

You stand a far better chance of taking a cutting or layering. Forsythia are very easy to propagate.
