Clapton
Clapton, without a doubt, shows excellent resistance to Club Root disease and for that reason alone is included in this list. This is a mid-autumn F1 variety which produces a good, white head which tends to be held well away from the ground thus avoiding splashes of soil. Recommended.
Graffiti
The major claim to fame of Grafitti cauliflower is the deep purple colour of their heads. To us they look scary but many find it very attractive. A mid autumn maturing variety which has an RHS Award of Garden Merit 2013. This is an F1 variety.
Mayflower
One of the earliest of all the mid-summer cauliflowers producing large solid heads. Dependable in almost all conditions. It has an RHS Award of Garden Merit 2013. This is an F1 variety.
Nessie
Nessie has been developed by Tozer Seeds being an early summer maturing F1 variety.
We have heard only positive reports of the is variety. It produces very white heads and is more reliable compared to many other varieties. A mid autumn maturing variety which has an RHS Award of Garden Merit 2013.
Snowball
This variety has been a favourite of gardeners for many decades but in our opinion it has been outclassed by new varieties over the last ten years. Snowball is an early summer maturing variety taking about 24 weeks from sowing to cropping. It seems to be sensitive to climate conditions and for that reason it’s not one of our favourites.
We have two more pages about cauliflower which are listed below:
- Growing cauliflower in the UK. We stick to the common early summer and mid autumn varieties to avoid confusion.
- Pest and diseases of cauliflowers in the UK. Your number one resource for all that can go wrong with cauliflowers, how to prevent them and available treatments.
VARIETIES OF CAULIFLOWER
There are so many different types of cauliflower that we have stuck to the two commonest types, early summer and mid-autumn maturing. Not only have we found that other types don’t do well in the UK but they require significantly different growing techniques. Our personal favourite and one we would recommend to those new to growing cauliflower is Nessie.
