ANSWER: Yes, strong, prolonged sunshine can cause the flower colour to fade. It should recover to thenormal colour next year.

QUESTION: I have a few of the larger potentillas yellow 4-5ft that I planted 5-7 yearsago.
I’ve successfully divided the plant but some look really scruffy. What’s the best way of getting rid of the twiggy bits
to stimulate the green young shoots? Is it safe to cut to a foot off the ground in September?
ANSWER: That would be fine. However, if they are unlikely to flower much this year,I would prune them back now and give them a head start for next year.

ANSWER: The potentilla variety Princess naturally fades asit ages. Strong sun canalso cause the petals to be bleached.

ANSWER: Potentillas can be hard pruned down to almost ground level and they will regrow. They have a life span of 15 to20 years.
I would prune it back by about a third and hopefully it will recover well.
ANSWER: Yes potentillas make ideal low hedges. Prune to shape in mid September when flowering hasfinished.
